Just Brave Enough ๐ŸŒŠ

2024 Issue #37 ๐ŸŒŠ

Happy Sunday, Reader!

Greetings from Sheboygan, where we enjoyed a whirlwind Wonder Weekend, hosting our 5th Wondernite on Friday, and the 2nd Wonder & Whimsy Society Family Reunion in our backyard yesterday. After months of preparation, it is now time for a multi-day coma. ๐Ÿ˜ด

After a speaking gig in Houston years ago, we drove down to Galveston to spend a little time near the Gulf. Our daughter Lucy, almost four years old at the time, waded in the water, immersed in a game she liked to call โ€œtricking the waves.โ€ Kim commented on how much deeper she was willing to go compared to just a few months earlier when we were in Florida.

Now, Lucy didnโ€™t go diving headfirst into the surf or anything, but she didnโ€™t need to. She was being, as I like to say, โ€œjust brave enough.โ€

I spent a lot of my childhood being afraid. I was afraid of new experiences. Of meeting new people. Of the unknown. Of drowning. Of looking stupid. Of the future. Of being a colossal failure in life. I was afraid of โ€œthe thunder, the lightning, and the firetrucks.โ€

Over the years, my faith has helped me deal with much of that fear, but itโ€™s still a part of my life. It is for all of us.

There have been many moments in my life when I have been afraid and like Susan Jeffers advises, โ€œfelt the fear and did it anyway.โ€ Those brief moments of bravery have increased my resistance to fear. Like Lucy, after I went a little deeper, my new position didnโ€™t seem all that deep anymore.

Iโ€™ve always been drawn to quotes about fear, courage, and bravery. The following quote comes from the movie โ€œWe Bought a Zoo,โ€ and I had to jot it down as soon as I heard it:

โ€œYou know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.โ€
โ€“Matt Damon in We Bought a Zoo

I donโ€™t know about you, but to me, there is great comfort in remembering that I donโ€™t have to be all brave and courageous every minute of my life.

Twenty seconds here and there will do.

2024 Issue #36 ๐Ÿฆ Happy Sunday, Reader! Greetings from Sheboygan, where our family is recovering from a road trip to Texas and is looking forward to Wonderite this week, which led me to think about the reasons I make and sell art... This painting was inspired by the lyric of a catchy tune from the 80s by a band named Modern English. Most listeners may not realize that this seemingly simple upbeat love song is actually about the end of the world. Lead singer Robbie Grey, who wrote the song with...
